Pihtipudas is a municipality of Finland.
It is located in northern Central Finland along the highway 4 (E75), about 140 kilometres (90 mi) north of Jyväskylä in the province ofWestern Finland. The municipality has a population of 4,562 (31 January 2011) and covers an area of 1,247.47 square kilometres (481.65 sq mi) of which 172.71 km2 (66.68 sq mi) is water. The population density is 4.24 inhabitants per square kilometre (11.0 /sq mi).
The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Pihtipudas is perhaps best known for the annual javelin carnival and Lauri "Tahko" Pihkala, the father of Finnish baseball. Putaanporttiarea offers plenty of services for travellers. Fish Art is a sales exhibition of taxidermic (mounted fish) – unique in Finland. Close to the service station there are shops – in a way factory outlets – specialised in sweets, leather bags and pottery products. Other tourist services are found in the central village and lakeside areas.
The scenery and history of Pihtipudas are easy to be found hand in hand on the bridge of Heinäjoki. Local museum and the church are next to each other in the center of Pihtipudas. Places worth mentioning are also Niemenharju area with well known dancing place, an old demarcation Rillankivi and lake Alvajärvi area.
